America’s Most Powerful Inland Towboat Unvieled
American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) has introduced the M/V ACBL Mariner, the most powerful inland towboat in U.S. history, during a special ceremony at the WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. This revolutionary vessel marks a new era for U.S. waterways.
The Mariner is 250 feet long and 50 feet wide, powered by two Caterpillar C280-12 engines producing 11,000 horsepower. This immense power allows it to push 64 barges carrying up to 75,000 tonnes of cargo, equivalent to the capacity of a Panamax cargo vessel.
Setting a new standard for sustainability, the Mariner is designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 20% per ton-mile compared to standard 6,000 horsepower towboats, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly operations.
Its draft can be adjusted by up to 18 inches, enabling the Mariner to navigate low water levels during dry seasons—a crucial feature for maintaining operations on the Mississippi River and other inland waterways.
Crew comfort is a priority with single-bunk staterooms and a spring-loaded isolation system in the superstructure, reducing vibrations and providing a smoother experience for the operators.
ACBL CEO Mike Ellis highlighted that the Mariner reflects the company’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and strength. This investment positions ACBL as a leader in the maritime and logistics industries for generations to come.
Constructed by C&C Marine and Repair, the Mariner is expected to be the first of many high-horsepower towboats designed to meet growing demands in the inland transportation market. Its cutting-edge technology and size set a new benchmark for the industry.
With its unmatched power, eco-friendly design, and focus on crew comfort, the M/V ACBL Mariner is more than a towboat—it’s a symbol of progress, redefining what’s possible for inland waterway transport.
