Iguana 29, a ten-passenger capacity boat is the latest addition to kitty of marine mobiles. The feature that sets it apart from rest is its ingenious retractable treads. These caterpillar-like treads that can be brought out when needed make this boat self sufficient for purpose of being launched into and out of water. They eliminate the need for an external source to back the boat up or be launched into the water.
The unique design of caterpillar like retractable treads has been developed by Antoine Fritschand Tanguy Bih. The treads remain hidden for most part, while in the water. This allows the boat to reach a maximum speed of up to 40 mph, on water surface. They can be brought out when the boat has to be launched or landed. The design aims to ensure that very little pressure is exerted during the boat’s movement on land.
This pressure could be lesser than that exerted by humans even, and ensures minimum damage to the terrain. This allows Iguana 29 to move on land with a maximum speed of around 5 mph. With such low speed, the need for boat to be moved with help of a boat trailer, especially over longer distances, cannot be completely eliminated. However, the retractable treads make it capable in the meantime, to be launched without additional aid.
The design aims to find maximum utility in areas that experience extreme coming and going of tides. With their capacity of up to ten passengers, Iguana 29 is being looked at as the next ferry boats for comfortable transportation between water locations. The current efforts are directed at improving its engine’s efficiency. Idea of a hybrid engine design has been proposed that will allow this boat to run on electric engines where gas engines might not be best suited.
Even though the retractable treads make this boat highly unique, along with increasing its utility immensely, absence of sleeping accommodations on boat could be a spoiler. No accommodation for sleeping arrangements on the boat makes it completely unsuitable for overnight travel. This appears rather as an oddity against the $287,000 price tag that Iguana 29 is currently available with.
