World’s Narrowest Strait Closed Temporarily After Tanker Engine Failure
Maritime Traffic through the Bosphorus Strait was suspended on August 25, 2024 (Sunday) night after a Russian oil tanker encountered engine issues.
The 171 m-long tanker Sredina experienced engine failure in the Bosphorus Strait. This led to the blockage of the strait’s northern entrance, which blocked traffic in both directions.
The tanker was towed safely, and the strait was reopened for shipping on Monday.
Bosphorus Strait is a strategic maritime chokepoint for cargo traffic into and out of the Black Sea, a key location for Russian oil exports.
The Panama-flagged ship was on its way from Novorossiysk to Benghazi.
