World’s Largest 26MW Offshore Wind Turbine Rolls Off Production Line In China
Dongfang Electric Corporation unveiled the largest offshore wind turbine in the world, a 26 MW unit, on October 12 at its facility in Fuqing City, Fujian Province.
The turbine, which has the world’s largest single-unit capacity, was officially launched at a ceremony attended by prominent officials, including Wang Jun, the deputy general manager of Dongfang Electric, and representatives from other provincial agencies.
This revolutionary wind turbine has over 30,000 parts, including generators, blades, bearings, and electronic control systems designed to world-class standards.
The unit demonstrates China’s rapid progress in wind power technology, contributing to its ambition of developing a new power system while meeting its “dual carbon” targets.
The turbine’s innovative third-generation semi-direct drive technology ensures exceptional reliability and efficiency. It increases torque by 67% over the previous 18MW model, greatly reducing vibration and temperature rise.
The turbine has dual anti-typhoon technology, allowing it to deal with situations similar to a Category 17 super typhoon. Earlier testing verified its resilience, with units using this technology successfully surviving the powerful typhoon “Makar.”
The turbine’s design includes a fully sealed structure to prevent salt spray corrosion and increase lifespan.
It uses innovative frequency conversion technology, which boosts overall power-generating efficiency by more than 2%. With an average wind speed of 10 meters per second, the turbine can operate for more than 4,000 hours per year.
This offshore wind turbine, designed for medium to high wind speed locations, has lower engineering and maintenance expenses, resulting in a cost-effective electricity generation rate.
Standing at a hub height of 185 meters, the turbine’s wind-swept area is equivalent to 10.5 standard football fields.
With an annual average wind speed of 10 meters per second, a single turbine can generate 100 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity.
This output can power about 55,000 houses, saving over 30,000 tons of traditional coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 80,000 tons.
Dongfang Electric Corporation has a proven track record of innovation. It has created Asia’s first 10 MW and 13 MW offshore wind turbines and the world’s first 18 MW model.
