The construction of the world’s first methanol dual-fuel intelligent Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) has begun.

Dalian Shipbuilding is constructing this vessel, which will be the eighth generation of VLCC ship types that the company has constructed independently.

The ship will be 333 meters long and 60 meters wide, with the capacity to transport around 2.1 million barrels of crude oil. It will be designed with sustainability, safety, and cutting-edge environmental features.

The vessel’s methanol dual-fuel main engine, combined with advanced emission-reduction technologies such as an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for the main engine, a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for the generator, and an open desulfurization washing tower, ensures compliance with the most recent environmental emission standards.

The revolutionary design maximizes energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The ship’s comprehensive design aims to optimize performance in all aspects. It will have advanced technology for energy efficiency, cargo management, operation and maintenance, and overall ship operations.

The project is a collaboration between Dalian Shipbuilding and China Merchants Shipping, a key strategic partner. The two companies have a proven track record of collaborating on ground-breaking projects, including 300,000-ton VLCCs and LNG carriers.

Per reports, the construction of this vessel is a major step toward the adoption of green and low-carbon technologies. It also aligns with China’s “dual carbon” approach, which aims to cut carbon emissions while promoting sustainable development.

The Dalian Shipbuilding Project Team has carefully managed the project, collaborating with the Dalian Shipbuilding Research Institute and other manufacturing units to meet deadlines and overcome challenges.

The design phase of the project focused on efficiency and optimization, ensuring that the ship’s building timeline is ahead of schedule.
