World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Two-Stroke Engine Test Marks Major Step Towards Zero-Emission Shipping
MITSUI E&S Co. Ltd. and MAN Energy Solutions successfully completed the world’s first hydrogen combustion test on a large marine two-stroke engine, marking a revolutionary milestone in the maritime industry. At its Tamano plant, MITSUI tested a 50-bore MAN B&W ME-GI engine modified to run on hydrogen at 100% load.
The test’s success is significant in developing hydrogen-fueled, emission-free ships. The hydrogen gas-supply system developed by MITSUI in 2023 demonstrated the viability of hydrogen combustion in maritime propulsion by enabling stable operation at various loads and operating situations.
Up to 95% of greenhouse gas emissions were eliminated during testing; the remaining portion came from the used pilot gasoline. MITSUI’s Chief Technical Officer, Gunnar Stiesch, commended the university for pushing the boundaries of decarbonisation and emphasised the project’s importance in furthering hydrogen-related projects.
Vice President of Two-Stroke Business R&D at MAN Energy Solutions, Brian Østergaard Sørensen, emphasised the project’s inspiring functionality and how it will influence future decarbonisation efforts in the maritime sector.
MAN Energy Solutions’ Bjarne Foldager, Country Manager for Denmark, expressed pleasure with the outcomes, highlighting the adaptability of two-stroke engine technology and its suitability for hydrogen as a fuel. He emphasised the significance of maintaining up-to-date on market trends to benefit hydrogen’s promise in nautical applications fully.
Head of Sales and Promotion at MAN Energy Solutions Thomas S. Hansen signalled the company’s preparedness to adopt hydrogen propulsion as the industry grows by highlighting the positive milestone for hydrogen as a fuel and reaffirming the company’s commitment to analysing the results for future action.
