Lake Tahoe, a major tourist attraction in California and Nevada, will debut the first electric hydrofoil ferry in the U.S. The ferry service is set to elevate travel experiences for locals and tourists.

The ferry, Candela P-12, known for its zero-emission technology, will connect the lake’s northern and southern ends in just 30 minutes, bringing the travel time in half compared to driving.

The ferry aims to ease traffic congestion and limit environmental damage caused by road sediment, which poses a major risk to Tahoe’s famous cobalt-blue waters.

The Candela P-12 is the world’s fastest electric ferry, cruising at 25 knots (around 30mph) and offering the longest range among electric ferries.

Unlike conventional boats, it uses hydrofoil technology (computer-guided underwater wings) to lift above the water, simultaneously reducing drag and energy consumption by 80%.

This technology allows it to operate on renewable electricity, drastically reducing operational costs compared to diesel ferries.

Passengers will enjoy a smooth, wave-free ride.

According to Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela, the ferry is like a jet fighter, constantly balanced by sensors adjusting the wing’s angle.

The ferry’s Flight Controller system ensures stability, even in high winds, by making constant adjustments, providing a comfortable and peaceful journey.

FlyTahoe, the local company launching this service, sees the P-12 as a game-changer.

CEO of FlyTahoe, Ryan Meinzer, says that the service will provide faster transportation than cars or buses while maintaining the beauty of Tahoe by keeping it blue.

With over 15 million people yearly, Tahoe faces severe congestion, especially during the winter when heavy snow causes road closures.

The ferry will operate all year round, accommodating skiers in winter and cyclists in the summer. Meinzer says they’ll be boosting socio-economic mobility by connecting the north and south of the lake.

A study conducted by the Tahoe Transportation District found that ferries were the most effective approach to reduce traffic.

However, the study did not consider the P-12’s exceptional efficiency, as the operating costs are nearly 10 times lower than those of conventional ferries.

Candela’s P-12 was recently launched in Stockholm.

Hasselskog says this new approach will unlock business possibilities for waterfront communities and ensure more efficient commuting.

The Candela P-12 offers a faster, greener future for Lake Tahoe and begins a new era in American maritime transport.
