World’s First Clean Ammonia-Powered Container Ship Paves The Way For Maritime Trade
The world’s first clean ammonia-powered container ship, the Yara Eyde, designed by Yara Clean Ammonia, Yara International and North Sea Container Line, will inaugurate the first-ever emission-free maritime route between Germany and Norway.
The CEO of Yara International, Svein Tore Holsether, highlights the significance of Yara Eyde being the first-ever container ship to utilise clean ammonia.
Since global shipping accounted for 706 million tonnes of CO2 emissions the previous year, cooperation will be essential to meeting the 1.5°C climate target by 2030. As a proponent of low-carbon solutions and a supporter of the Green Shipping Challenge, Yara International is a member of the First Movers Coalition and promotes clean ammonia as a fuel for emission-free vessels.
Yara Eyde was designed especially for the trade route that links Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Oslo, Porsgrunn, and Germany. Norwegian businesses will be able to participate in emissions-free trading as of 2026.
By shipping fertiliser made in Porsgrunn free of emissions to Germany as a cargo owner, Yara International will lower scope three emissions by 11,000 tonnes of CO2 yearly.
North Sea Container Line’s Bente Hetland commends Yara Eyde for offering cost-effective and emission-free logistics, citing the increasing demand from cargo owners to lower emissions.
The president of Yara Clean Ammonia, Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, emphasises the necessity of commercialising low-emission technologies within the next ten years and the significance of providing carriers with incentives to select low-carbon fuel.
To establish Yara Eyde, Yara Clean Ammonia and the North Sea Container Line have partnered with NCL Oslofjord to manage the vessel. The joint endeavour seeks to be the first line operator specialising only in container ships running ammonia. NOK 40 million in support has been provided by Enova, which is essential to the project’s execution.
With Elkem, the primary stakeholder, providing industrial DNA, North Sea Container Line is excited to work with Yara to drive a new industrial revolution.
Clean ammonia is predicted to reduce shipping emissions by about 3%, allowing for more ecologically friendly global shipping of goods.
According to Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, Yara Eyde is a big step toward Yara’s emission-free supply chains. This project showcases clean ammonia’s ability as a marine fuel and shows how economical and eco-friendly it is for maritime transportation.
Yara Clean Ammonia hopes to promote the hydrogen economy by leveraging the market’s predicted significant expansion in the upcoming decades.
