World’s 1st Certified Electric Hydrofoiling Ferry Enters Service In New Zealand

Vessev’s VS-9 electric hydro foiling ferry, named Kermadec, has officially entered commercial service with Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry transport and tourism operator.

This is the first time a certified electric hydro foiling vessel has joined the fleet of an operator for commercial use.

The VS-9 will now operate tourism trips across Auckland’s waterways, offering a fast and smooth travel experience. The nine-meter ferry travels at a service speed of 25 knots and has a range of 50 nautical miles (92.6 km), powered by type-approved battery packs.

Its hydrofoiling technology is adapted from America’s Cup racing yachts, allowing it to “fly” above the water instead of sailing through waves.

Vessel CEO Eric Laakmann stated that the entry of the VS-9 into Fullers360’s fleet will help the company reach its net zero target by 2040. He also said that the public can now experience the same advanced technology that Vessev has been testing since launching the VS-9 in May 2024.

According to Fullers360’s Chief Commercial Officer, Tim O’Halloran, the VS-9 is an innovative addition to the company’s fleet. He said the vessel’s modern design and sustainable operation make it an ideal fit for Auckland’s maritime environment.

The VS-9 is designed for passenger comfort and convenience, with a spacious, modern interior and large panoramic windows offering scenic views of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, Harbour Bridge, and the surrounding Gulf.

Since the vessel operates using a zero-emission propulsion system, it aligns with the government’s vision for greener transportation networks.

The hydrofoiling technology used in the VS-9 also makes it more energy-efficient than traditional ferries. According to Vessev, this results in a lower total cost of ownership compared to displacement-hull vessels, whether powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors.

The VS-9 can also operate in various sea conditions and can be transported over land using a trailer.

Laakman stated that, traditionally, larger vessels have been required to provide a comfortable passenger experience because they can handle waves better.

However, the VS-9 achieves the same stability by flying above the water, offering a large-vessel experience on a smaller, more agile platform.

He also said that the ability to charge and berth the ferry at almost any marina opens up new possibilities for passenger transport.

Vessev is now working on the VS-18, a 100-seater electric hydrofoiling commuter ferry. The VS-9 began its journey in May 2024 when Vessev launched the vessel in Auckland. By June 2024, the company had completed its initial testing phase with 24 test sessions.

Passengers can now experience the VS-9 on guided tourism trips across Auckland’s waters. The ferry operates from Wednesday to Sunday, with departures at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Bookings can be made through the Fullers360 website.
