The Yemeni Houthis attacked the Panama-flagged tanker M/T Cordelia Moon in the Red Sea with missiles and an unmanned surface vessel on October 1, 2024.

The incident occurred about 64 nautical miles from Al Hudaydah, Yemen, when the vessel, which was unladen and in ballast condition, transited the Southern Red Sea.

Per the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), the attack occurred in multiple stages, with the vessel sustaining damage but not requiring assistance.

All crew members are reported safe, and the Cordelia Moon continues its journey to the next port of call.

The ship’s Master reported that at 0150 UTC, three projectiles landed near the port bow. At 0253 UTC, a fourth projectile struck 100 meters from the aft starboard quarter, and at 0500 UTC, the vessel was hit by an unmanned surface vessel on its port side.

The Houthis released video footage of the moment when the explosive-laden USV hit the tanker, causing a massive explosion and damage to the ship’s port-side tank, covering the vessel in smoke.

Per the JMIC’s assessment, the vessel was most likely targeted because operational connections with U.S., U.K., and Israeli associations were the most at risk.

Ships associated with companies making port calls in Israel are also considered to be potential targets.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it involved eight ballistic and winged missiles, a drone and an unmanned surface vessel.

Apart from the M/T Cordelia Moon, a Liberian-flagged bulker was hit by a Houthi-launched missile while en route to the Suez Canal, about 97 nautical miles northwest of Al Hudaydah.

Both vessels have reported that their crew were unharmed.
