Viking Ocean Cruise has accepted the delivery of its new ship, the Viking Vesta, during a ceremony held at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Italy’s Ancona.

It is a small cruise ship with a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tons and 499 staterooms for 998 passengers.

She will soon join the company’s fleet of ocean ships and will spend her first season sailing in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

Viking Vesta can sail on conventional marine diesel but has been designed with future technologies in mind, so she can be easily retrofitted to incorporate new systems as they become mainstream in the sector.

Its delivery comes a few weeks after Viking and Fincantieri announced details about th Viking Libra, the first hydrogen-powered cruise ship in the world, which can function with zero emissions.

Viking Libra is already under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard and will have a propulsion system based partially on hydrogen and fuel cells, and will be delivered in 2026.

Viking’s next ship after this is Viking Astrea, which is also being built and is scheduled to be delivered in 2027. This cruise ship will also be hydrogen-powered.

Viking is focusing on long-term growth and expansion as it plans to take delivery of 27 additional river ships by 2028 and 10 ocean ships by 2031.

The company is expected to possess 111 river vessels by 2028 and 23 ocean-going ships and expedition vessels by 2031.

Viking, founded in 1997, offers destination-focused cruises on oceans, rivers and lakes across the world with specially designed itineraries for curious travellers with an interest in science, history, culture and cuisine.

The cruise line is known for its Scandinavian designs and premium onboard experiences filled with cultural enrichment, no casinos or children under 18, showing its commitment to a refined and immersive cruise experience for discerning guests.
