A massive fire broke out overnight at a shipyard in Egypt, destroying multiple fishing boats and pleasure craft. The fire started late on Thursday, January 30, 2025, in the Adabiya area, south of the Suez Canal, and burned for about six hours before emergency teams managed to contain it.

According to local media reports, the shipyard area was mainly used for fishing boats and pleasure craft. Egyptian authorities confirmed that while there were no fatalities, three people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officials also stated that at least ten fishing boats and other vessels were destroyed in the fire.

Firefighting teams from the Suez Governorate responded to the incident, but their efforts were hampered by the presence of flammable materials in the shipyard.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and the reasons behind its rapid spread. A separate report mentioned that a similar fire incident occurred in the “Ataka” region of Suez early on Friday, January 31.

Foreign media, citing Egyptian officials, stated that this fire affected at least six ships and boats. Firefighting teams were deployed to control the blaze, and no fatalities were reported.

A recent fire at a candle-making workshop in Shubra Al Khaymah, north of Cairo, resulted in the deaths of seven people. Reports reveal that the workshop was operating without a permit in a residential area, raising questions about regulatory enforcement.

Authorities have been pressurised to implement stricter safety regulations to prevent such incidents, especially in high-risk industries like shipbuilding.
