US Charges Greek Company With Pollution Cover-Up
A US court has charged a Greek ship management company, corporate vessel owner and chief engineer on six counts of falsification of pollution records, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
The charges against Chartworld Shipping Corporation, Nederland Shipping Corporation and the Greek chief engineer follow a US Coast Guard inspection of the Bahamas-flagged Nederland Reefer when it entered Delaware Bay in February. They found that the vessel had falsified its records to cover up overboard discharges of oily wastewater. The defendants were also charged with obstruction of justice and witness tampering by directing lower level crew members to withhold evidence from the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard also found a breach in the vessel’s hull, resulting in seawater entering its tanks.
