US Army Vessel En Route To Gaza With Essential Humanitarian Supplies
The U.S. has deployed a military aid ship to the Eastern Mediterranean in response to President Joe Biden’s promise to help Gaza. The U.S. Army Vessel (USAV) General Frank S. Besson (LSV-1) is headed to Gaza, departing from Joint Base Langley-Eustis less than thirty-six hours after Biden’s announcement.
The ship, part of the XVIII Airborne Corps’ 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) of the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, establishes a temporary pier to facilitate a more accessible supply of essential humanitarian supplies.

General Frank S. Besson departed the Virginia facility following Biden’s announcement during his State of the Union speech, according to Central Command (CENTCOM). The move comes after the United Nations issued bleak warnings about widespread starvation in Gaza, which has been increased by Israel’s recent offensive against Hamas militants.
Gaza, which lacks port facilities, has significant obstacles to accessing relief, with the majority of the population internally displaced. The humanitarian efforts have been exacerbated by the Israeli Navy’s restrictions, which have been in place since 2007. As a result, the United States has chosen to use Cyprus as a screening point for supplies that are headed for Gaza.
The U.S. military leads this humanitarian mission, but other organizations organize mobilizations. Two hundred tons of food supplies are set to depart from Cyprus on a Spanish humanitarian ship in partnership with the American nonprofit organization World Central Kitchen to reach the coastline of Gaza.
Meanwhile, Biden has emphasized prioritizing civilian lives first and increased his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s crisis handling.
The number of casualties in Gaza is rising as the humanitarian crisis worsens. A recent Israeli airstrike on a residence in Gaza City killed at least nine Palestinians, including children. The impact of the conflict highlights how urgently international assistance is needed to help alleviate Gaza’s suffering.
