The Ukrainian military is claiming to have destroyed the Russian submarine Rostov-on-Don. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the Kilo-class submarine, which is part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, was sunk in a missile attack on the port city of Sevastopol on August 02, 2024.

The Rostov-on-Don, built in 2014, was one of the Black Sea Fleet’s four submarines capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles. If confirmed, the attack would represent a major blow to Russia’s naval capabilities in the Black Sea.

Kyiv claims that the submarine sank soon after the attack. The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet responded to the incident, and CNN has been unable to verify the claim independently.

In addition to the submarine attack, the Ukrainian military announced the destruction of four S-400 air defense systems. These systems were reportedly positioned to protect the peninsula, which Russia unlawfully invaded in 2014.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry celebrated the attack, stating that the destruction of these devices might potentially reduce airspace restrictions over Crimea, allowing for more effective Ukrainian air operations.

The strike on Rostov-on-Don comes after a series of successful Ukrainian operations against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Ukrainian officials claim that their forces have already inflicted major losses on the fleet, with estimates indicating that one-third of Russia’s navy vessels in the Black Sea have been disabled or destroyed.

Russia’s worst naval loss during the conflict was the sinking of the guided-missile cruiser Moskva in April 2022.

Ukraine’s recent increase in long-range attacks includes a claimed attack on the Morozovsk airfield in Russia’s Rostov region. According to reports, Ukrainian drone barrages targeted ammunition warehouses, causing critical infrastructure damage.

The escalation of Ukrainian attacks coincides with increasing pressure on Western allies to provide longer-range missiles to Kyiv, though the US and other partners have been cautious about such support, fearing an increase in tensions with Russia.

Additionally, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck an apartment building in Shebekino, Belgorod, killing one person and injuring several more.

Ukrainian officials have also asked the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations to examine alleged abuses of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces.

As Ukraine continues its attack, the situation remains volatile, with serious consequences for regional security and international relations.
