Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), the largest military shipbuilding company in the United States, successfully launched the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship Harrisburg (LPD 30) on October 5, 2024.

This is the first vessel in the LPD Flight II series, built at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division.

The ship was transported from land to a floating dry dock using translation railcars. Final preparations were completed at the dry dock before the official launch.

Per sources, Ingalls Shipbuilding President Kari Wilkinson discussed the importance of this step for both national security and the company’s commitment to supporting the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

She said that the launch reflects their commitment to developing capabilities for the armed forces.

Harrisburg (LPD 30) is part of a larger program that includes a recent procurement deal for three additional San Antonio-class amphibious ships, designated LPD 33-35.

Along with that, a contract modification has been acquired for the next America-class large-deck amphibious ship (LHA 10).

Two more LPD Flight II ships, Pittsburgh (LPD 31) and Philadelphia (LPD 32), are now under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Pre-construction work is underway for Philadelphia, the 16th vessel in the San Antonio class.
