U.S. Forces Destroy Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile And 2 Drones Fired By Houthis
In a recent military conflict in the Red Sea, the USS Gravely (DDG 107) and U.S. Central Command forces intercepted and destroyed an inbound anti-ship ballistic missile and 2 unmanned aerial systems launched by Houthi militants in Yemen. The incident occurred on April 3rd, between 3:49 and 10:00 a.m. (Sanaa time).
According to a statement from U.S. Central Command, no injuries or damage were reported to U.S., coalition, or commercial ships during the interception.
In addition, CENTCOM forces targeted and destroyed a mobile surface-to-air missile in Houthi territory, which they deemed a risk to regional security.
This is the latest in a series of conflicts between U.S. forces and Houthi terrorists, who have been attacking ships in the Red Sea since November.
The attacks have included drone and missile strikes, some of which were intended at Israel but had no obvious connection to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The Houthi campaign continues despite prior US-led airstrikes and efforts to resolve the conflict.
Earlier this month, CENTCOM reported the destruction of four unmanned aerial vehicles in Houthi-controlled regions, as well as the launch of four anti-ship ballistic missiles into the Red Sea, with no casualties or ship damage.
The continued escalation in the Red Sea, combined with the conflict between Israel and Hamas, has hindered United Nations-led efforts to enable political discussion aimed at ending Yemen’s long-running conflict.
The U.N. ambassador for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed concern that the latest escalation could damage the intention to achieve a statewide ceasefire, originally intended to be completed by the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in early March.
Yemen’s conflict began in 2014, when Houthi militants seized control of much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Gulf Arab coalition to intervene in support of the internationally recognised government.
Since then, the violence has claimed the lives of nearly 150,000 people and forced millions to abandon their homes.
