TMC’s Smart Air Compressors To Power 6 New Container Vessels Built For Maersk
Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has awarded TMC Compressors (TMC) a contract to supply energy-efficient Smart Air compressors for six mid-sized container vessels being built for Maersk.
These vessels, with a capacity of 9,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027.
The Smart Air compressors use frequency-controlled technology, which adjusts the compressor’s speed based on real-time air consumption.
This design allows the system to produce only the required air volume, reducing power consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional compressors.
The compressors also minimise wear on mechanical components, decrease generator fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The new vessels will feature dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both fuel oil and green methanol. When running on green methanol, the ships are expected to reduce Maersk’s annual greenhouse gas emission by about 450,000 tons CO2e per year.
According to a spokesperson from TMC, the compressors are specifically designed for marine and offshore use, ensuring optimal energy savings through precise air production.
The system’s efficiency benefits include reduced energy consumption, lower operational costs, and environmental advantages. The ships will replace older vessels in the same size segment and modernise the company’s fleet.
Last month, Maerks commissioned three shipyards to build 20 dual-fuel container vessels with capacities between 9,000 and 17,000 TEUs. These ships, equipped with advanced propulsion systems support the company’s long-term sustainable goals.
