Taiwan Unveils Its First Domestically Built Unmanned Ship, “Endeavor Manta”
Taiwan Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC) has unveiled its first domestically developed unmanned surface vessel (USV), the Endeavour Manta, at a launch event held at Kaohsiung’s Dafa Shipyard.
The Endeavour Manta measures 8.6 meters in length and 3.7 meters in width, with a payload capacity exceeding one tonne.
The vessel boasts a maximum speed of over 35 knots (64.82 km/h) and features multiple remote-control communication modes, including 4G, radio frequency, and satellite connectivity.
The USV includes swarm control mode, autonomous navigation with collision avoidance, AI target recognition, and anti-hijacking functions equipped with cutting-edge technology.
Its hull is constructed from fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), ensuring durability and resistance against harsh sea conditions.
CSBC Chairman Huang Cheng-hung stated that the vessel’s design prioritizes maneuverability and seaworthiness. The Endeavour Manta incorporates a trimaran hull design for enhanced stability, given the rough sea conditions of the Taiwan Strait, where wind and waves can reach levels 5 to 7.

In a combat scenario, the vessel can be armed with light torpedoes mounted externally on both sides and high-explosive charges at the bow.
This allows it to execute saturation attacks, first engaging enemy vessels with torpedoes before ramming them with explosives to ensure mission success. The swarm capability further enhances its strategic effectiveness, as a single control console can manage up to 50 USVs simultaneously.
CSBC has emphasized a “de-red supply chain” approach, ensuring that no Chinese-made components are used in the vessel’s construction. Most of its systems are manufactured domestically, except for the satellite communication system and outboard motors, which are sourced from foreign suppliers.
Furthermore, CSBC subsidiary TSMC Power Technology has developed the USV’s remote control technology, allowing for easy expansion and customization based on operational needs.
The vessel is designed to be cost-effective and easily deployable from ports, beaches, or military ships, making it a versatile asset in Taiwan’s maritime defense strategy.
The Endeavour Manta showcased its agility with high-speed maneuvers, Z-shaped and figure-eight movements, double-circle navigation, and autonomous signal switching during the unveiling at Kaohsiung’s Singda Port.
Notably, the USV demonstrated its ability to return autonomously even if its guidance and control signals were jammed or lost.
Although CSBC has opted not to participate in the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) unmanned boat competition in June, the company remains confident in the USV’s potential.
Taiwan’s Republic of China Navy (ROCN) and other civilian agencies are expected to express interest in acquiring the vessel for future operations.
