Suez Canal Authority Urges Maersk To Resume Gradual Transits Through The Strategic Waterway
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has urged Maersk to gradually resume transits through the Suez Canal, during a high‑level meeting in Ismailia between Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the SCA, and Danish Ambassador Lars Bo Møller, attended by Vice Chairman Ashraf Atwa and senior officials.
The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Denmark in maritime affairs and developing ongoing projects of mutual interest.
Chairman Rabie conveyed pride in the long‑standing partnership between the SCA and Maersk, noting that it had delivered significant successes, particularly in the planned expansion of the Suez Canal Container Terminal at East Port Said.
The expansion is expected to enhance the port’s capacity and transform it into a key regional hub.
Rabie reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to developing maritime and logistics projects that take advantage of the canal’s strategic location. He invited Maersk to take the initiative in gradually resuming transits through the canal, citing the company’s extensive historical relationship with the waterway.
Ambassador Møller praised the Authority’s continued cooperation with Maersk, especially through the developments at East Port Said. He said that the terminal’s expansion would significantly improve the competitiveness of the port, helping it become a major regional hub.
He added that the return of major shipping lines to the Suez Canal was expected, but Maersk was still monitoring developments in the Red Sea before making a decision.
The Suez Canal Authority, an Egyptian state body responsible for managing, operating and maintaining the canal, is overseeing a series of development projects aimed at strengthening Egypt’s role in global maritime trade.
Maersk is one of the world’s largest integrated transport and logistics companies, offering container transport, port services, and logistics worldwide.
