St. Lawrence Seaway Strike Disrupts Shipping At Thunder Bay
The ongoing strike of workers at The St. Lawrence Seaway has left goods and ships stranded at the port.
The strike of 361 workers began after the negotiations between the Unifor labor union and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation broke down.
Major concerns are shown as the port holds a significant importance in loading and unloading of transports which would entirely stop if the strike continues.
Chris Heikkinen, CEO of the Port of Thunder Bay said “It’s the busy time of the season for shipping grains as well as potash and other Western Canadian commodities, so every day that the strike continues has an impact here in Thunder Bay.”
According to Heikkinen, activities at the port are still underway as long as shipments like grain are offloaded onto trains.
Although the port has some storage space, Heikkinen estimated that eventually, it will reach its capacity. If shippers choose to take alternate routes to avoid the port, the extended shutdown may also have an adverse effect on business.
“We are very hopeful that the parties in the negotiations come to an agreement so we don’t reach that sort of tipping point,” he stated.
Several ships are presently standing in the port while they wait for the strike to end.
