Smart Container Alliance Launched To Strengthen Global Trade Security

A new industry alliance, the Smart Container Alliance, has been officially launched to promote the adoption of smart container technology.

This initiative brings together industry leaders to enhance cargo traceability, strengthen maritime trade, and support global enforcement agencies in combating criminal activities such as smuggling and cargo theft.

The Alliance highlights the increasing risks to global trade due to geopolitical instability and climate-related disruptions. Cargo theft, smuggling, and the activities of drug cartels have become a major focus for authorities worldwide.

The group emphasises the need for shipping companies to implement the highest levels of security and efficiency to address these concerns.

The Smart Container Alliance will advance industry standards, advocate for policy changes, and foster collaboration among technology providers, shipowners, customs authorities, and international regulatory bodies, including the European Union (EU) and the World Customs Organisation (WCO).

According to Charles Vincent, CEO of ARVIEM, “Smart cargo and container telematics are the foundation of the 21st century supply chain.

These technologies provide innovative solutions to reduce illegal trade, cargo contamination, waste, theft and carbon emissions while improving product authentication, delivery commitments, asset productivity and cargo integrity.”

Erik Lund, EVP Maritime & Logistics at Nexxiot, says that by working together, the Alliance will act as a central platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, develop best practices, and expand smart container adoption globally.

The launch of the Smart Container Alliance coincides with the most significant reform of the EU Customs Union since its establishment in 1968.

Smart containers will play an important role in shifting customs operations towards a data-driven approach. Cedric Rosemont, CEO of Traxens, stated that “by sharing expertise, addressing challenges, and shaping policies, the Alliance can accelerate smart container adoption and make a significant impact on trade security.”

The Alliance will advocate for the economic and technological benefits of smart container solutions by showcasing real-world applications of their effectiveness.

Christian Allred, CCO of ORBCOMM, stated, “Standardizing smart container data ensures greater interoperability, efficiency, and security, helping authorities prevent illicit trade while ensuring the smooth flow of legitimate goods.”

The Alliance is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, and will actively engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and enforcement agencies to support a harmonised approach to trade security.

The founding members of the Smart Container Alliance include Arviem, Globe Tracker, ORBCOMM, Hoopo, Traxens, and Nexxiot.

The group is welcoming stakeholders to join in its mission of expanding technological advancements in global trade security.
