Saudi Arabia Reveals Its First-Ever Cruise Ship Regulations To Boost Red Sea Tourism
The Saudi Red Sea Authority has brought about the country’s first regulatory framework governing cruise ship operations, highlighting the Kingdom’s efforts to become a renowned cruise tourism centre in the world.
The guidelines focus on ensuring maritime safety, security and quality through the journey of the cruise tourists, from their embarkation to return, per Saudi Press Agency.
The new rules mention the role and responsibility of ship agents, port authorities and also simplify the procedure of getting permits and licenses.
Safety is the main pillar, and the rules state that emergency plans are a must, as well as regular and proper crew training, and adherence to international standards.
Cruise Ships visiting the Saudi Ports must have first aid kits, safety equipment and well-qualified medical personnel.
The guidelines also include measures to protect the marine environment of the Red Sea. It lays down how tourists can enjoy shore excursions while respecting the local culture and the resources.
For operators, they must implement waste management systems, treat wastewater and follow a zero-discharge policy.
To protect the fragile ecosystem of the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia has made it compulsory for visiting ships to comply with MARPOL and SOLAS.
While the main objective is to promote cruise tourism without harming the Red Sea, enhancing the tourist experience is also important.
Hence, the rules laid down that cruise and port service providers must give high-quality transportation services to the guests, top-notch entertainment, catering and information services, ensuring transparency and efficiency at every step.
It also lays special emphasis on effective resolution of cruise tourists’ complaints and proper handling in case of changes in the itinerary to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for the cruise passengers.
