Russian Nuclear Submarine to Visit Cuba Amidst Moscow’s Strained Relations with U.S Over Ukraine
While tensions soar between Russia and the U.S. over Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine, a Russian nuclear submarine, which is not carrying nuclear weapons, is set to visit Havana, Cuba, in the coming week, confirmed the Cuban Communist Authorities.
Nuclear Sub Kazan and three Russian Naval Ships: Missile Frigte Admiral Gorshkov, a salvage tug and an oil tanker ship will stay in the capital of Cuba from June 12th to June 17th, 2024.
According to the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces, the vessels are not loaded with nuclear weapons; hence, their visit to Cuba is not a threat to the U.S or any other nation.
The news of this visit came out a day after the U.S said that they had been monitoring Russian Naval Ships, which were to reach the Carribean for a naval exercise, said to be part of a broader Russian response to the U.S support for Ukrainian forces.
Russian President Putin’s statement that Moscow could take “asymmetrical steps” due to Biden’s decision allowing Ukraine to employ U.S weapons to attack Russia is a major concern for Washington.
The deployment of Russian Naval Ships near the U.S. Coast, especially its powerful nuclear submarine, comes at a time of strained Russian and U.S. diplomatic relations over Ukraine.
Russian naval ships’ visit to Cuba also overlaps with Joe Biden’s visit to the G7 Leaders Summit in Italy.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel met Vladimir Putin recently for the military parade held each year on the Red Square outside the Kremlin on May 9th.
Russian-Cuban relations have improved significantly since 2022 after a meeting between leaders of both countries.
