Royal Caribbean Locks Meyer Turku For Next Decade, Orders Fifth Icon-Class Vessel
Royal Caribbean Group has signed a major long-term agreement with Meyer Turku in Finland, securing the right to build ships at the shipyard through 2036. This deal strengthens one of the cruise industry’s most significant partnerships and includes firm orders and future options for the groundbreaking Icon-class vessels.
As part of the agreement, Royal Caribbean confirmed an order for the fifth Icon-class ship, scheduled for delivery in 2028, pending financing. The deal also adds an option for a seventh ship, in addition to an existing option for a sixth. These ships are the world’s largest cruise vessels, at 250,000 gross tons.
Royal Caribbean has already launched two Icon-class ships. Icon of the Seas began service in January 2024, followed by Star of the Seas in August 2025. The third ship, Legend of the Seas, is expected in summer 2026, and the fourth is under construction for delivery in 2027.
The agreement is a milestone for Royal Caribbean as it prepares to develop the next generation of cruise ships beyond the Icon class. The company described the upcoming vessels as “game-changing,” aiming to transform vacation experiences through 2036.
Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean’s president and CEO, called the deal an important step in redefining the future of cruising. For Meyer Turku, the deal ensures steady work for years. Casimir Lindholm, the shipyard’s CEO, said the agreement represented a “common plan for the next decade” with Royal Caribbean and key partners.
The Finnish government welcomed the agreement. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said it was “excellent news for Finland,” highlighting job creation and growth for the maritime sector. Sakari Puisto, Minister of Economic Affairs, added that Finland’s shipyards, industrial networks, and research institutions position the nation as a top destination for future investment in shipbuilding.
The Icon class has already delivered significant results for Royal Caribbean, with the launch of Icon of the Seas generating strong passenger demand and premium ticket pricing. This long-term agreement ensures that Meyer Turku will remain the builder of choice for Royal Caribbean for the next decade.
Under this framework, Royal Caribbean is not only expanding the Icon class but also positioning itself to introduce a completely new class of ships in the years ahead.
