QatarEnergy To Boost LNG Production By 85% With “North Field West” Project

QatarEnergy has announced that it is moving ahead with a brand new LNG expansion undertaking, dubbed the “North Field West” project, to bolster the State of Qatar’s LNG capacity for production to about 142 million tons every year (by the end of the decade, or almost 85 per cent more than current levels. This announcement came through at a press conference conducted at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha by H.E. Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the company’s president and CEO.

H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi said that thorough testing and appraisal drilling have proved that the massive North Field of Qatar has productive layers that continue westward, permitting the development of an additional LNG production facility in Ras Laffan.

H.E., the Minister, has informed that QatarEnergy has been focusing on assessing how far west the productive layers of North Field can extend to judge the production potential from the zones. They have continued geological and engineering research and drilled several appraisal wells in the area.

The Minister is pleased to announce that the efforts have confirmed, through technical examinations of the appraisal wells, the extension of the productive layers of North Field further toward the west, which also highlights the ability to generate significant and added gas quantities from the new sector.

H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi announced that there are additional significant gas levels in the North Field, estimated at approximately 240 trillion cubic feet. This pushes up the State of Qatar’s gas reserves from 1,760 to almost 2,000+ trillion cubic feet. Besides vast quantities of ethane, LPG, and helium, the condensate reserves also got pushed from 70 to 80+ billion barrels.

These are very significant outcomes with major dimensions that are going to take Qatar’s gas industry to new heights, as they will allow it to start developing a new LNG project from the western sector of the North Field with a production capacity of approximately 16 MTPA, stated H.E., the State for Energy Affairs’ Minister and President and CEO of QatarEnergy.

Therefore, when this additional extension is finished by the end of this decade, the State of Qatar’s overall LNG production will amount to roughly 142 MTPA. By comparison, this is a nearly 85% increase over current output levels. After this project concludes, the State of Qatar will produce more hydrocarbons overall than 7.25 million barrels of oil equivalent each day.

H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, for his leadership, guidance, and support of Qatar’s energy sector. QatarEnergy continues working to implement many elements of the North Field production expansion assignments, including the North Field East assignment and the North Field South one.
