Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the immediate dispatch of several emergency planes to Iran after a deadly blast at the country’s largest port, Bandar Abbas.

According to Russia’s emergency ministry, the explosion occurred on April 26, and the initial reports reveal that the blast, likely caused by the detonation of chemical materials, led to atleast 46 fatalities and left more than 1000 people injured.

The explosion occurred at Shahid Rajaee Port, which is located in the southern Hormozgan province along the Strait of Hormuz, an important waterway for global trade.

Iranian state media have reported that the explosion originated from a fire in the container dock area.

The situation worsened quickly because of the extreme heat and flammable materials, making the fire spread rapidly.

In response to the tragedy, President Putin expressed his condolences for the loss of life in Iran and offered Russia’s full assistance in managing the aftermath of the disaster.

A Beriev Be-200 amphibious aircraft, which is equipped for firefighting, has been sent to help manage the fire and an Ilyushin II-76 military transport plane has been dispatched to transport supplies and emergency personnel to the affected area.

The Russian Embassy in Tehran confirmed the situation, stating that emergency specialists from Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations were on their way to Iran to assist with efforts at the port.

The embassy expressed hopes for a successful collaboration between Russian and Iranian rescue teams, discussing the importance of Shahid Rajaee Port for Iran’s economy and the safety of its citizens.
