PM Modi Unveils India’s First Hydrogen Hub Port Along With Rs. 17,300 Crore Green Energy Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a series of projects worth 17,300 crore rupees in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, focusing on sustainable infrastructure and green energy initiatives. An important initiative that marked a turning point in renewable energy solutions was the launching of the nation’s first hydrogen hub port, VO Chidambaranar Port.
The doubling of railway lines, the expansion of national highways, and the launch of India’s first indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel under the Harit Nauka Initiative were other significant infrastructural developments. The Cochin Shipyard-built hydrogen-powered electric vessel represents India’s dedication to renewable energy innovation.

Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of the vessel in advancing sustainable alternatives and renewable energy. India’s renewable energy requirements could be met by using green hydrogen generation to reduce emissions in several industries, such as chemical production, steelmaking, and refining.
The inaugural event also unveiled tourist facilities at 75 lighthouses spread across ten states, aiming to increase tourism and improve coastal infrastructure. Road projects totalling about Rs. 4,586 crore and rail projects to double the Vanchi Maniyachchi-Nagercoil rail line were launched to enhance connectivity and shorten travel times.
Tamil Nadu’s crucial role in India’s progress was emphasised by Prime Minister Modi, who also highlighted the state’s importance in several developmental efforts. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving citizens’ goals and highlighted the projects’ revolutionary potential. VO Chidambaranar Port’s Outer Harbour Container Terminal is a significant investment in improving maritime facilities.
The prime minister highlighted the government’s multi-modal strategy for promoting economic growth and connectivity in his speech. Concurrently launched initiatives in the railway, roadway, and maritime sectors demonstrate a cohesive growth strategy. Tamil Nadu and southern India stand to gain significantly from the emphasis on waterways and the maritime industry, which will also contribute to the growth of the regional economy.
