Philly Shipyard Christens New Training Ship ‘Patriot State’ For Massachusetts Maritime Academy
On September 9, 2024, the second National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), the Patriot State, was officially christened at Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia.
The new vessel will be an essential training platform for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Patriot State is a 160-meter multipurpose vessel that can transport up to 8,500 tonnes of cargo. The vessel is designed to function as a state-of-the-art training ship and an asset for disaster relief operations.
The vessel has advanced facilities, including a hospital, a helicopter pad, and RoRo capabilities for relief missions. It can accommodate up to 1000 people during a humanitarian crisis.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated that the vessel’s christening is historic and that the program will benefit skilled workers by creating new jobs and opportunities at Philly Shipyard.
The President of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, highlighted the vessel’s dual purpose, stating that the ship will not only provide cadets with hands-on training but will also be prepared to serve the nation in times of crisis by providing crucial support for disaster relief missions.
The National Security Multi-Mission Vessel program, managed by TOTE Services under contract with the Maritime Administration (MARAD), plans to build five vessels within six years.
The first vessel, the Empire State VII, was delivered in September 2023. Each NSMV vessel has instructional areas, a complete training bridge, and accommodations for up to 600 cadets at sea.
U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro attended the ceremony and praised the program’s accomplishments, stating that the vessel and its mission to train the cadets will benefit maritime statecraft for decades.
Del Toro highlighted the importance of restoring U.S. maritime power. The goal is supported by the recent acquisition of Philly Shipyard by Korean shipbuilder Hanwha.
Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Maritime Administrator Hon. Ann C. Phillips, and Philadelphia Shipyard President and CEO Steinar Nerbovik attended the event.
Philly Shipyard, a renowned shipbuilder in the United States that works on commercial and government projects, will soon complete the Patriot State, an essential asset for training future U.S. Merchant Marine and Navy leaders.
