The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia’s largest transhipment hub, has made history by handling 12,253,309 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2024.

This makes it the first container terminal in Malaysia to surpass the 12 million TEUs mark in a single year, breaking its previous record of 11.2 million TEUs set in 2021.

The historic 12 millionth TEU was recorded at 7:00 pm on December 23, 2024. The achievement solidifies its position as one of the world’s busiest and most efficient container terminals.

PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said that the port has overcome challenges and maintained high operational standards.

While PTP’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Hardiman highlighted the stability and productivity of the port despite handling high volumes. He added that the team worked hard to ensure no congestion and maintained reliable services for customers.

PTP’s achievements in 2024 include several records:

  • In July 2024, PTP handled 1,115,181 TEUs, its highest monthly volume ever.
  • On September 22, 2024, PTP achieved 14,036 quayside moves in a single 12-hour shift.
  • For seven consecutive months since May 2024, the port handled over one million TEUs per month.
  • In December 2024, the port successfully implemented the Kaleris’ Navis N4 4.0 terminal operating system, ensuring readiness for future growth.

PTP has also made great progress in its environmental initiative. Since joining the Malaysia-Australia Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) program in 2023, the port has been working to promote sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure.

In December 2024, PTP completed its first methanol bunkering operation for a dual-fuel methanol box ship owned by A.P. Moller-Maersk.

PTP continues to receive global recognition for its efficiency and capacity:

  • Ranked fifth in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023 by The World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
  • Ranked 15th among the world’s top container ports by volume, according to Lloyd’s List.

With an annual capacity of 13 million TEUs, PTP has solidified its reputation as Malaysia’s leading transhipment hub, providing advanced services and reliable global connectivity.

The port aims to build on its achievements and set new benchmarks in 2025 and beyond.
