NYK Unveils AI-Powered Car Carrier Allocation System For Faster, Greener Shipping
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), MTI Co., (MTI), and Grid Co., (Grid) have jointly developed and launched an AI-based system to automate and optimise the allocation of car carriers.
The system, which began full-scale operations at NYK in July, can evaluate millions of potential shipping schedules within about 10 minutes to generate optimal allocation plans.
NYK operates more than 100 car carriers, making it the largest fleet of its kind worldwide. Previously, planning the allocation of these vessels was an extremely complex and labor-intensive process.
Planners had to assess hundreds of voyages months in advance, taking into account numerous factors to balance efficiency, costs, and schedules.
The new system gathers and organises all data and decision-making factors involved in shipping and scheduling. It analyses multiple variables, including customer requirements, fleet operating status, repair schedules, and port congestion risks. Using AI, it creates plans that improve vessel utilisation, make transport more efficient, and lower costs.
Beyond operational efficiency, the system also integrates environmental considerations. It accounts for the effective use of next-generation fuel ships and incorporates carbon pricing, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Experts say this approach not only supports economic efficiency but also contributes to environmental sustainability.
NYK, MTI, and Grid have expressed their commitment to further developing the system to enhance car carrier operations.
