MPA Launches World’s First Digital Bunkering Initiative
Singapore has revolutionised the maritime industry and established a new benchmark for fuel supply by launching the first digital bunkering initiative in history.
The electronic bunker delivery notes (e-BDN) system, set to replace conventional physical bunker delivery notes and revolutionise bunkering operations, was recently launched by MPA.
Over 20 businesses in the Singapore bunkering ecosystem have participated in over 100 trials since January 2023.
The e-BDN system will be further refined with the help of insightful feedback from these trials.
The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) official approval of this development during its 80th Marine Environment Protection Committee session adds even more significance.
This approval not only gives Singapore’s innovative efforts legitimacy but also makes it possible for other ports worldwide to implement the same sort of technology.
The industry is expected to benefit from the switch to digital bunkering in several ways, including more productivity, reduced paperwork, and streamlined procedures.
Moreover, this action is consistent with the industry’s dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability.
The dedication of MPA to inventiveness goes beyond digital bunkering.
They are actively looking to improve the bunkering process, such as automating the data flow from mass flow meters.
To guarantee the ongoing development and progress of digitalisation in the maritime industry, the MPA is interacting with the sector.
MPA has signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese partners and regional maritime administrations in addition to the digital bunkering initiative.
