MOL Drybulk To Equip 7 New Bulk Carriers With Wind Propulsion Systems

Japan’s largest shipowner, Mitsui OSK Lines, has recently expressed confidence in a wind propulsion system, declaring plans to install Wind Challenger hard sail on a further seven multipurpose (popular as MPP) and dry bulk carriers.

Mitsui OSK Lines also added that it is considering installing Anemoi’s Rotorsail on some vessels along with the Wind Challenger.

The installations are expected to add to four vessels already equipped with different forms of wind propulsion.

The company’s Wind Challenger tech was developed in collaboration with Oshima Shipbuilding.

Mitsui OSK Lines will install EconoWind’s Ventifoils on an MPP scheduled for delivery in 2025.

The company has the “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2” in place and has also set its goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

One of the primary strategies to achieve the target includes the introduction of clean energy and more energy-saving technologies.

Mitsui OSK Lines plans to launch 25 vessels enabled with Wind Challengers by 2030 and 80 new vessels by 2035, emerging as the world’s most dedicated investors in advanced wind technology.

The MOL Group will contribute to minimising GHG emissions from its group and reducing and decarbonising society through safe management and efficient operation of an ecologically friendly fleet that combines wind propulsion tech, such as the Wind Challenger.
