Maersk has started a new weekly container service into Ukraine amidst Russia’s increased rocket attacks on civilian vessels and Ukraine’s ports.

The first ship under this service left Egypt’s Port Said on Thursday and will reach Chornomorsk on October 22.

Maersk’s Ukraine office mentioned that this is a vital step in enhancing the efficiency of the company’s clients in the Ukrainian market.

It is not clear if this service will be additional or replace Maersk’s existing operations, which run four feeder ships between Chornormorsk and Constanta in Romania.

Russia’s relentless attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and facilities have raised concerns about the future of Kyiv’s shipping sector.

Despite all troubles, like rising insurance premiums and ships turning off their AIS signals in Ukrainian waters, shipping continues, signalling resilience.

A shipowner whose vessel was recently targeted by Russian forces said that he would continue operations in the region. Hapag-Lloyd, which started container operations in Ukraine in 2023, also confirmed that it will not stop its services.

Also, a spokesperson for HHLA, the operator of a container terminal in Odesa Port, said that the terminal is operational despite Russian missile strikes.

Though nearby facilities like the government-owned Chornomorsk port sustained damage, the will to sustain seaborn operations remains.
