Maersk, in collaboration with Nike, will unveil the world’s first methanol-powered container ship at the Port of Los Angeles in August.

The public is invited to witness this engineering marvel, which aims to transform sustainable shipping operations.

The christening ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, at the Port of Los Angeles Outer Harbor, will commemorate the debut of a ship powered by green methanol and capable of carrying 16,000 containers.

Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, will conduct the ceremony alongside Nike executives and state officials, highlighting a shared commitment to decarbonizing global supply chains.

Nike, known for its ambitious sustainability initiatives, sees this relationship as critical to advancing their “Move to Zero” mission.

Nike’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, Venkatesh Alagirisamy, stressed the company’s plan to integrate biofuels into ocean shipping, which was made possible by relationships with sustainable leaders such as Maersk.

Following the christening on Wednesday, August 28, Maersk will open the vessel for public excursions, providing a unique glimpse into the future of maritime innovation.

Visitors can explore the ship’s 350-meter length, including the crew’s living quarters and the cutting-edge bridge from where the captain directs operations.

Free tickets for the tours will be accessible via an online registration site that will go up in August.

This vessel marks a big step forward in Maersk’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and attaining net-zero emissions by 2040.

Maersk has already ordered 20 more methanol-enabled vessels, each with cutting-edge design features that increase container capacity and port efficiency as part of its fleet growth.

Maersk’s commitment to exploring alternative fuels reinforces its position as a pioneer in sustainable shipping practices.
