Maersk Celebrates Naming Of Latest Dual-Fuel Vessel “Alexandra Maersk” In UK
Shipping giant Maersk named its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel Alexandra Maersk at the naming ceremony at the Port of Felixstowe, UK, on October 9, 2024.
The ceremony was attended by UK Maritime Minister Mike Kane, representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Maersk employees, and significant customers, including Primark.
The Alexandra Maersk is the sixth vessel in Maersk’s fleet capable of operating on methanol-powered engines.
The ship is one of 18 dual-fuel methanol vessels set for delivery between 2024 and 2025. Each has a carrying capacity of over 16,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).
The methanol-powered fleet is essential for Maersk’s decarbonization plan. Methanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 90%, depending on its feedstock and production process.
During the ceremony, Mike Kane highlighted the importance of such progress, stating that these vessels contribute to a greener and cleaner maritime environment.
Kane also discussed the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing alternative fuel technologies.
Primark, one of Maersk’s key partners, has already taken steps towards sustainability by adopting Maersk’s Eco Delivery Ocean product, which uses low-emission fuels like biofuel and green methanol.
Primark’s CEO reiterated the company’s goal to cut carbon emissions across its value chain by 2030.
Additionally, Vincent Clerc, the CEO of Maersk, discussed the need for collaborative efforts in the green transformation of shipping and the need for IMO support in decreasing the price gap between green and fossil fuels.
