LR & Orbital Marine Power To Begin Certification Of World’s Most Powerful Tidal Energy Converter
Llyod’s Register has collaborated with Orbital Marine Power, a renewable energy company, to officially begin the IECRE certification procedure for the world’s largest tidal energy converter (TEC).
This certification will assess Orbital’s next-generation O2-X TEC, which, once operational, is estimated to produce 2.4 MW of electricity.
The certification process will adhere to the International standard IEC TS 62600-4 and the IECRE operational document OD 310-4 involving ten specialists from Llyod’s Register who will evaluate the TEC against these and other relevant IEC and ISO standards.
The initial assessment will result in an IECRE Feasibility Statement.
The IECRE technology qualifying process involves both verification and validation. The verification will result in an IECRE Feasibility Statement, whereas validation will result in an IECRE Conformity Statement.
The successful completion of these stages will result in formal certification through other IECRE marine energy certification processes, such as Prototype and Type Certifications.
Winston D’Souza, the Global Technical Authority for Offshore Renewables at Llyod’s Register, expressed interest in the assessment of the O2-X TEC. D’Souza talked about Llyod’s Register’s unique capabilities as the only IECRE RECB authorized to evaluate this technology per international standards.
Calum Miller, Principal Engineer and Hydrodynamics Manager at Orbital Marine Power highlighted the importance of starting the IECRE certification process for the O2-X turbine. He talked about the design’s adaptability to various tidal site classes and its role in supporting series production, which is powered by a strong project pipeline.
Miller also recognized the importance of Lloyd’s Register’s independent expertise in strengthening investor trust and advancing the O2-X into series production.
