The Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC) has received Lloyd’s Register’s approval in principle for the design of a dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier with a capacity of 12,800 CEU, which is set to become the largest in the world.

The AiP was presented at the Posidonia expo in Athens this week as part of LR and MARIC’s joint development project (JDP).

Sau Weng Tang, LR Commercial Manager for Greater China, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating that Lloyd’s Register is thrilled to award MARIC with AiP for this dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier design, solidifying their relationship with MARIC.

The new-generation vessel has a load capacity of roughly 12,800 automobiles, far above the previous generation’s capacity of 9,000 to 10,000 vehicles.

Despite the increased capacity, daily fuel consumption is limited due to the innovative dual-fuel power system that can operate on ammonia.

The ship can also incorporate solar energy and batteries, lowering greenhouse gas emissions by up to 89% when green ammonia is used instead of conventional fuel oil.

The PCTC is designed for efficiency and flexibility.

Its multi-layer lifting deck can be changed to fit different vehicle types and sizes, maximising space use and transportation capacity.

The interior features efficient ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) loading and unloading systems, ensuring smooth operations.

In addition to ammonia, the vessel can accommodate various propulsion alternatives, such as conventional gasoline, LNG, methanol, and dual-fuel systems, making it flexible to varied energy sources.

The recognition of this PCTC design demonstrates LR’s commitment to advancing innovative and environmentally sustainable maritime solutions as the industry works to fulfil stringent emission reduction targets.

During the event in Athens, LR also awarded numerous other approvals to other companies, highlighting its role as a prominent classification organisation in advancing marine technology.
