The Indian Registrar of Shipping has successfully certified an Autonomous Navigation System with Dual Navigation capabilities developed in partnership with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

The MDL tug MT Andaman was used to demonstrate the pioneering technology.

Mr. R. Srinivas, VP & HOD Electrical & Control System, led the IRS project and oversaw a thorough assessment of the autonomy concept, system documentation, and software quality.

This included a comprehensive risk assessment by the IRS Guidelines for Remotely Operated and Autonomous Surface Vessels.

The Autonomous Navigation System software was rigorously tested at the manufacturer’s development centre using simulation and an Approved Factory Test method.

The system includes a Remote Control Centre (RCC), allowing you to control and monitor the vessel remotely.

Following the installation of the autonomous systems on the MT Andaman, the IRS tested the system’s functionality using the approved Harbor Acceptance Test process.

During harbor trials, vital equipment, navigation parameters, and situational awareness systems were monitored, and propulsion and steering systems were controlled remotely from the RCC.

On May 23rd and 24th, 2024, the IRS monitored the tug’s autonomous sea trials.

These trials, which followed the approved Sea Acceptance Test process, successfully demonstrated collision avoidance by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG).

Several emergency response methods were also tested, including dealing with the loss of critical controls and communicating with the RCC.

The Indian Navy assisted with these sea trials by sending an interceptor boat, assuring the safety and success of the testing operation.

With the growing demand for autonomous vessels in mission-critical operations, this significant development is a big step forward for the defence sector.

The government’s ‘Make in India’ policy broadens the opportunities for Indian system developers and shipyards.

Cdr. K.K. Dhawan, Head of Defence of IRS, stated that the collaboration demonstrates the IRS’s commitment to boosting the Indian maritime industry through revolutionary autonomous technology.

IRS is well-positioned to assist the industry in creating advanced autonomous systems while adhering to high safety and quality standards, leveraging on its experience from previous similar projects.
