India’s Paradip Port Completes Its 1st Ship-to-Ship Special Grade Diesel Oil Transfer

Paradip Port, one of the major ports of India and the only major port of Odisha, has successfully completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of special-grade diesel oil at the North Oil Jetty in the harbour area.
The operation represents a crucial milestone for the port as it adopts innovative methods to reduce shipping costs and enhance operations.
The STS transfer was carried out from MV Orkim Fortitude to the empty tanker MV Torm Republican.
Port officials stated that this was the first ever ship-to-ship oil transfer conducted within the harbour, demonstrating the port’s operational capability and flexibility.
STS operations are crucial for transferring cargo in the absence of shore reception facilities enabling seamless cargo transfer despite logistical challenges.
Typically, STS transfers include bulk cargo, crude oil, liquefied gas (LPG or LNG), and petroleum products.
Paradip Ports’ ability to conduct these operations at the outside anchorage and within the harbour has expanded its operational capabilities.
Due to poor weather conditions at the anchorage, the STS transfer was carried out inside the harbour.
Chairman Shri P.L. Haranadh and Deputy Chairman Shri Nilabhra Dasgupta commended Team PPA on this outstanding achievement.
A symbolic cake-cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the achievement, with the PPA Chairman leading the celebration.
The Paradip Port Authority’s (PPA) in-house pilots managed the entire operation, with assistance from the Marine and Traffic teams.
The achievement not only demonstrates the port’s operating efficiency but also establishes itself as an epitome for future STS transfers within the harbour, potentially generating more business and increasing the port’s competitive advantage.
