Indian Navy Makes History With First-Ever Tri-Commissioning Of Warships & Submarine

In a historic move, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval combatants, namely, INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer on the 15th of January, 2025 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

This marks the first-ever simultaneous commissioning of a destroyer, frigate and submarine. The day is also commemorated as Army Day in India. In his speech, PM Modi discussed the importance of the occasion.

He added that the commissioning ceremony solidifies India’s “Make In India” initiative, to strengthen domestic defence production.

INS Surat is a P15B guided missile destroyer, and one of the largest and most advanced destroyers built in India, with 75% indigenous content.

INS Nilgiri is a stealth frigate under the P17A project, incorporating advanced design and stealth technologies.

INS Vaghsheer is the sixth submarine of the Scorpene Project (P75). It reflects India’s growing expertise in submarine construction.

PM Modi described the induction of these vessels as a major step towards creating a modern and self-reliant Indian Navy. Over the past decade, the Navy has expanded its fleet with 33 ships and 7 submarines, with 30 of the 40 vessels constructed in Indian shipyards.

He said that India’s defence production has surpassed ₹1.25 lakh crore, with exports reaching over 100 countries. He also announced the development of defence manufacturing hubs in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The shipping industry is expected to gain investments of ₹1.5 lakh crore, generating an economic impact of ₹3 lakh crore and creating job opportunities, particularly in small and medium enterprises.

PM Modi discussed the country’s growing role as a maritime power in the Indian Ocean Region, serving as a “First Responder” in situations of crises and ensuring security in the Indo-Pacific.

He reiterated the country’s commitment to combating issues like piracy, terrorism, and illegal resource exploitation.

The country is moving forward with key infrastructure initiatives, including the Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, and the Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra, with investments exceeding ₹75,000 crore.

These projects will strengthen coastal and border infrastructure.
