Indian Navy Gets Delivery Of Biggest Ever Survey Vessel, INS Sandhayak

An official said that Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (abbreviated the GRSE) Ltd, a defence PSU, handed over the “largest-ever” survey vessel created in the country, INS Sandhayak, to India’s Navy on Monday.

The first of the four survey vessels built by GRSE for the navy, INS Sandhayak, was introduced on December 5, 2021, and underwent fitting out and trials thereon.

The 110-meter-long vessel was handed over on 4 December, which is National Navy Day, said a GRSE spokesperson. Commodore P R Hari, GRSE Chair and MD, and the vessel’s commanding officer, Commodore R M Thomas, authorised the protocol of delivery and acceptance.

The INS Sandhayak is a reincarnation of another vessel with the same title that was also deployed as a survey vessel. The latter was commissioned into the Navy’s fleet in 1981 and decommissioned in 2021.

The survey ships, which have been fully designed by the GRSE, are capable of end-to-end coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of port and harbour approaches and identifying navigation channels and routes, he said.

He added that the Sandhayak-class ships can also conduct maritime boundary surveys and collect oceanographic and geographical data for defence uses, adding muscle to India’s marine capabilities.

Apart from carrying a helicopter, participating in low-intensity fighting, and serving as hospital ships, these ships can also be employed for humanitarian aid and disaster relief activities, per the official.
