The multi-role Indian frigate INS Brahmaputra of the Indian Navy caught fire while undergoing maintenance at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, leaving one sailor missing.

The ship, now resting on its port side, was severely damaged by the incident.

The fire broke out on the evening of July 21, 2024, and despite immediate efforts by the ship’s crew and firefighters from the dockyard and neighbouring ships, it was brought under control by the morning of July 22, 2024.

The Indian Navy reported that further actions, such as sanitization inspections to assess the residual risk of fire, were carried out.

However, after the fire, the INS Brahmaputra began to list to its port side.

Despite multiple attempts to stabilize the ship it remains tilted and is resting on its side alongside the berth.

The Indian Navy confirmed that all personnel onboard had been located except one junior sailor who is still missing. The rescue teams are extensively searching for the missing sailor.

The Indian Navy has initiated an official inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, has informed Defense Minister Rajnath Singh of the situation and the damage sustained.

The Defense Minister’s office expressed concern for the safety of the missing sailor.

The INS Brahmaputra, the first of the Indian Navy’s indigenously built Brahmaputra class guided missile frigates, was commissioned in April 2000.

The frigate is outfitted with a range of armaments and sensors with a displacement of 5,300 tonnes.

The incident is still being investigated as the Indian Navy continues to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of all personnel involved.
