India Approves Deal To Construct 2 Nuclear Submarines & Acquire 31 Predator Drones
India has approved the construction of two nuclear-powered submarines and the purchase of 31 predator drones.
The deal, finalized on October 9, 2024, was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security.
The submarines, which will be constructed at the Shipbuilding Centre in Visakhapatnam, will strengthen the Indian Navy’s underwater fleet.
The project worth ₹45,000 crore will involve significant contributions from the private sector, including Larsen & Toubro.
These new submarines will play an important role in boosting India’s presence and power in the Indian Ocean Region.
Per reports, the deal has been in development for some time as the Indian Navy required more nuclear-powered submarines to fill its undersea capacity shortages. India plans to develop six similar submarines in total.
India will also purchase 31 Predator drones from the United States under a government-to-government contract.
The drones will be allocated to the Navy, Army, and Air Force, with the Navy receiving 15 of them. The drones are expected to be delivered within four years.
The use of Indian-made components by DRDO and Solar Industries in Predator drones supports the government’s Make in India initiative and is expected to strengthen the country’s surveillance capabilities during both peacetime and conflict.
India plans to expand its submarine fleet and improve its drone capabilities amid rising security concerns in the Indian Ocean, especially in response to China’s growing influence in the region.
These nuclear submarines, which are faster and can stay underwater longer than conventional submarines, would be crucial in ensuring India’s maritime security.
