Iconic Navagio Beach Shipwreck At Risk Of Disappearing Due To Extensive Damage
The renowned shipwreck on Navagio Beach, Zakynthos, is at risk of disappearing due to extensive damage caused by waves and weather, according to local authorities.
The MV Panagiotis, which ran aground in October 1980, is now partially buried in the sand and severely damaged.
Zakynthos Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos emphasized the municipality’s responsibility to manage and protect this important site.
Experts in Greece are urging immediate action to protect both the shipwreck and the beach.
The beach, which was recently awarded the best in the world, has been closed to tourists for two summers in a row due to landslide concerns.
Deputy Governor of the Ionian Islands, Konstantinos Kapodistrias, highlighted three major issues: the deteriorating shipwreck, the cliff instability above, and a lack of vantage points.
In February, scientists at the National Technical University of Athens estimated that preserving the beach for the next twenty years would cost up to €4 million ($4.3 million).
Professor Efthymios Lekkas warned that if the ship disappears, the beach might return to its pre-shipwreck state, losing its unique appeal.
Despite the shipwreck’s cultural and historical significance, including its alleged involvement in the smuggling of illegal alcohol and cigarettes, local and central governments have disagreed on funding.
Kapodistrias emphasized the need to preserve the ship, citing its role in the Normandy invasions.
A Ministry of Finance official suggested that the local government charge a fee to fund the restoration, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to protect the landmark.
Navagio Beach, previously known as Agios Georgios, gained fame after being featured in the Korean drama Descendants of the Sun, which attracted many Chinese and Korean tourists.
The beach has been closed multiple times due to safety concerns.
In 2018, a cliff collapse led to temporary restrictions on swimming and boat mooring.
Additionally, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in September 2022 caused another landslide, which closed the beach for the entire summer of 2023.
Local authorities are now facing a critical juncture.
Without prompt action, the iconic shipwreck and Navagio Beach’s unique identity could be lost forever, affecting local culture and tourism.
