Houthis Attack Liberia-flagged Oil Tanker With Drones & Missiles In The Red Sea
The Olympic Spirit, a Liberian-flagged tanker, was hit by drones and missiles in the Red Sea on October 10, 2024, in an attack claimed by Iran-backed Houthis.
Per the British Maritime Security firm Ambrey, the incident occurred about 73 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s port of Hodeidah.
The tanker was en route from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Muscat, Oman, when a projectile hit the bridge, causing minor damage to its starboard side.
No casualties or fires were reported onboard the vessel, as per reports.
Four hours later, two more projectiles exploded near the vessel’s port side, around 0.27 nautical miles away, but did not cause any more damage.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that the captain confirmed the vessel remained seaworthy despite minor technical issues.
The tanker has continued its route to its next destination, and the crew has been reported safe.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted the Olympic Spirit using two drones and 11 ballistic missiles.
They also claimed to have struck another vessel, the St. John, in the Indian Ocean.
The Houthis have increased their attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November in solidarity with the Palestinians amid Israel’s war in Gaza.
Over 100 attacks on ships have been reported, including the sinking of two vessels and the killing of at least four seafarers.
The terrorist group continues to launch drones and missiles at global shipping, often targeting vessels with links to Israel, the US and the UK.
