Greece To Acquire Italian Bergamini-Class Frigates To Modernise Its Fleet

Greece is in discussions with Italy to buy two second-hand Bergamini-class frigates, to upgrade and modernise its defense system.

Defense Minister Nikos Dendias spoke about this during a recent defense conference, discussing the country’s strategy to move towards a more advanced and tech-driven military setup.

The deal with Italy is one part of Greece’s huge defense plan worth €25 billion. This long-term investment will be spread over 12 years and includes the purchase of submarines, drones, and the development of a new air and drone defense system.

The country is also exploring the possibility of acquiring a fourth French Belharra-class frigate, which would be equipped with cruise missiles.

Greece already spends around 3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense, almost double the average spending of other European Union countries.

In recent years, it has stepped up its military capabilities by purchasing French Rafale fighter jets, new warships, upgraded American F-16s and is also planning to buy the highly advanced American F-35 aircraft.

During the conference, Dendias explained that Greece aims to move beyond the old defense model that relied heavily on large fleets to protect the Aegean Sea.

Instead, the focus has been shifting towards modern and flexible systems that use advanced technologies.

He said the country is working on creating a connected defense network, which will include AI-powered missile systems, drone technologies, and smart command units.

The modernisation plan also covers next-generation soldier equipment. Greek forces are expected to be equipped with wearable gear that includes sensors and advanced communication and performance in combat situations.

Another important step will be the development of satellite systems to ensure safe and secure communication during wartime.

The defense minister called this change a major transformation for the country. He described it as an “existential” shift in Greece’s defense policy, a complete change in how the country thinks about and prepares for security threats.

Even though relations with neighbouring Turkey are calm, Greece is moving forward with its defense spending as a precautionary measure to protect its long-term interests.
