A humanitarian aid ship with 12 activists onboard, including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, has sailed from Catania, Italy, for Gaza on June 1, 2025.

The ship Madleen, backed by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), will deliver the much-needed essential supplies to Palestine, in a second attempt in the last 5 weeks, after the organisation’s ship Conscience was hit by Israeli drones while on its way to Gaza on May 2, 2025.

Though Israel has not responded to the allegations but it is reported that veiled threats are being issued to the second ship Madleen as well, which is carrying baby formula, rice, flour, diapers, sanitary products for women, water desalination kits, crutches, medical supplies and children’s prosthetics.

The ship is named after Madleen Kulab, a 30-year-old woman who is Gaza’s first and only fisherwoman. Before hostilities escalated in October 2023, Madlessn would go to the sea, as far as Israeli blockade permitted, to support her family from fishing.

Over the years, Israel has continued its blockade on Gaza, which is called the world’s biggest open prison.

FFC is an international movement that has worked to end the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza and describes the mission as a peaceful act of civil resistance, and said that the ship’s volunteers and crew members are unarmed civilians.

Activists onboard the Madleen include the well-known Greta Thunberg and others, namely; Rima Hassan, a French- Palestinian member of the European Parliament; Yasmine Acar, an activist and researcher from Germany; Omar Faid who is a french journalist with Al Jazeera; Baptiste Andre, a French physician Thiago Avilia, a Brazilian FFC Activist; Yanis Mhamdi, a French journalist working with the Blast News site; Pascal Maurieras and Reva Viard From France, Sergio Toribio from Spain, Marco Van Rennse from the Netherlands; and Suayb Ordu from Turkiye.

FFC said that this mission is dangerous, highlighting what happened with their previous vessel, Consicence.

Madleen is expected to arrive in waters off the Gaza coast soon, but it remains to be seen whether Israel will let the ship dock.

An Israeli Defence Forces spokesperson has said that it will defend itself in the maritime arena and will act accordingly.

As a precautionary measure, Madleen has been broadcasting its real-time location for the world to see and trace its journey. It is presently sailing in a southeasterly direction to Gaza on the Mediterranean Sea, to the south of the Crete Island.
