A man died and another sustained injuries after they fell from a hiking trail above downtown Juneau, per authorities.

Both were cruise ship passengers who were visiting the capital of Alaska.

According to Alaska State Troopers, the news of the missing passengers reached them on Tuesday.

A search and rescue operation was launched, and one of the men was found with minor injuries while the other, a 36-year-old from Texas, sadly died from the impact of the fall.

His body was found by drones farther down the mountain.

One of them had called 911 for help, the troopers’ spokesperson Tess Williams said.

She said that the men had followed a path that was not the actual trail. It was close to a tram that shuttles people between the downtown area, where cruise ships dock, and a developed site 1,800 feet up a mountainside, which is famous among tourists.

The Mount Roberts trail passes through that area and then goes towards a ridgeline and peaks that tower over downtown.

Williams added that at the time of the incident, it was dark and foggy with light rain, which made the ground slippery. Conditions off the trail were slick.

In July 2025, another cruise passenger, a woman from Kentucky, was found dead in the mountains above downtown Juneau. A search operation was initiated after she did not return to her cruise ship after the hike.
