COSCO Orders Twelve 14,000 TEU Methanol Powered Container Ships Worth $2.15 Billion
COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry and COSCO Shipping Container Lines will build twelve 14,000 TEU container ships having dual-fuel methanol propulsion, per the contract signed between them.
The ships will be a part of a new generation of ship types. They will be jointly developed by COSCO Shipping Lines, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, and China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute.
The new ships will be 335.9 m long, and 51 m wide and have an invisible bulb bow and stern energy-saving device. They will be equipped with advanced technologies and provide a loading capacity of 13,700 standard containers.
They will also have ‘the world’s strongest’ permanent magnet shaft generator, bow wind deflector, air lubrication system for hull and intelligent systems. These will meet the 3rd phase of EEDI Energy Efficiency Indicators and the recent cyber security regulations.
The dual-fuel main engine and the generators will both be fuelled by methanol to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
Each vessel will be priced at 179.5 million dollars and the value of the contract signed in Shanghai on August 29, 2024, is 2.15 billion dollars, per the shipowner. The vessels will be delivered between May 2027 and March 2029.
COSCO mentioned that with this contract they want to support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, by bringing in green, eco-friendly vessels and also promote the making of a green and low-carbon fleet.
Apart from building new vessels, the company is also modernising its existing ships to accelerate the green and low-carbon transition of its fleet.
In 2022, the company placed an order for twelve 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships worth 2.86 billion dollars.
Wartsila was contracted to offer methanol-fueled auxiliary engines for the ships.
